Oxalyl chloride is a colorless to pale yellow fuming liquid with a strong pungent odor. It is a highly corrosive and irritating acylating agent. It is chemically very reactive and decomposes rapidly upon contact with water, alcohols or strong alkalis, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. It is highly corrosive to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
